Van Halen Ends ‘Hide Your Sheep Tour’ At US Festival In 1983

95

Eddie Van Halen sadly died this past week at the age of 65. The influence of the legendary guitarist and Van Halen co-founder is immense. As a hard rock band that came to prominence in the 1970s, Van Halen was also on the vanguard of the emerging heavy metal genre and Eddie Van Halen’s guitar techniques, especially his prevalent use of finger-tapping, would become cornerstones of metal guitar.

Those techniques are on full display at Van Halen’s appearance at the US Festival on May 29, 1983 at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino, California. The appearance marked the end of the band’s 1983 Hide Your Sheep Tour. The performance also came at the tail end of the David Lee Roth era as the iconic frontman would leave the group in 1984. A number of the song performances at the US Festival mark the last times the songs would be played live for years or final live performances period.

The show gets underway with one of those songs, “Romeo Delight,” which wouldn’t be played live again until 1998, as per SetlistFM. The set also features classics like “Runnin’ With The Devil,” “Jamie’s Cryin’” and “Dance The Night Away.” Additionally, the concert contains the last known live performance of the Martha And The Vandellas-popularized “Dancing In The Street.”

Throughout the show, Eddie Van Halen shows off his guitar prowess and it’s not just in his famed solo section. Eddie adds tasty stuff that compliments Roth on songs like “Everybody Wants Some!!” But then he does step into the spotlight proper for his own guitar section comprised of perhaps his solo guitar masterpiece, “Eruption,” as well as “Spanish Fly,” “Little Guitars” and “Mean Street.” The band would close things down with an encore of their classic cover of The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” and “Happy Trails.”
