Up next in our week of revisiting memorable Halloween live concert performances available in the JamBase Live Video Archive (JBLVA) are The String Cheese Incident. The band has played Hulaween concerts dating back to 1996.
In 2013, The String Cheese Incident turned their Halloween celebrations into multi-band Suwannee Hulaween festivals held at The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. Before that, Hulaween was held at different venues in different cities. Charlotte (1996), Atlanta (1997, 1998), Philadelphia (1999), Portland (2000), New York City (2001), Los Angeles (2002, 2005, 2006), Las Vegas (2003), Madison (2004) and Hampton (2010) hosted Hulaween ahead of seven installments of Suwannee Hulaween spanning 2013 – 2019.
The String Cheese Incident started a tradition of debuting covers at Hulaween 1999. More recently, the sextet has presented guest-filled and cover-filled performances tied together with a theme on the Saturday night of Suwannee Hulaween. Exodus | Hulaween 1999
For Hulaween 1999, The String Cheese Incident played the Electric Factory in Philadelphia. The band loaded the second set with covers starting by performing a rendition of Bob Marley’s “Exodus.” From there, SCI tackled the Beatles’ “Octopus Garden,” Paul Simon’s “Under African Skies” and Men At Work’s “Down Under” before concluding the frame with their own “Pirates.” In 2005, The String Cheese Incident busted out “Exodus” in Denver and 11 additional performances followed as per Phantasy Tour.

Jump | Hulaween 2010
On October 29, 2010, Cheese played their first of two Hulaween concerts at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. The band ended the night with a debut cover of Van Halen’s biggest hit, “Jump.” Drummer Michael Travis dressed as David Lee Roth and handled lead vocals, while percussionist Jason Hann got behind the kit. “Jump” was performed one additional time by The String Cheese Incident, as they played the song from Van Halen’s 1984 album at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado on December 30, 2012.

Turn On Your Love Light | Hulaween 2017
SCI’s performances at Suwannee Hulaween 2017 were highlighted by a “Night Of The Loving Dead” set on October 28, 2017 at The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. The sextet’s third and final set of the evening focused mainly on covers of songs with “Love” in the title. One such number was a rendition of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light.” The sextet was augmented on “Love Light” by vocalists Tony White and Rhonda Thomas and a horn section consisting of saxophonist Kenny Hamilton, trumpeters Dennis Marion and Marcus Parsley and trombonist Richard Sherrington.

Gimme Shelter | Hulaween 2018
The String Cheese Incident presented “A Hula Incident: Celebrating Women Of The Galaxy” performance as their third and final set on the Saturday night of Suwannee Hulaween 2018 at The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. Cheese kicked off the frame by inviting vocalist Lisa Fischer to lead the band through a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “Gimme Shelter.” Additional guests who joined the group later in the set included Jennifer Hartswick, Rhonda Thomas and Ann Wilson.

Hey Pocky Way | Hulaween 2019
On October 25, 2019, The String Cheese Incident played their first of three Suwannee Hulaween 2019 performances at The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. The sextet ended their opening set with a guest-filled rendition of The Meters’ “Hey Pocky Way.” Cheese was joined by Lyle Divinsky and Joey Porter of The Motet as well as vocalists Rhonda Thomas and Tony White. SCI took fans back to the 1990s the next night for a set filled with covers of songs from the decade.
