Seattle public radio station KEXP presented an acoustic Wilco concert on August 10, 2015. The KEXP New Home benefit was held at Seattle’s The Columbia City Theater and KEXP shared professionally-shot video of the entire set shortly after the show, which can be viewed below.
Proceeds from the concert helped fund a new home for KEXP at Seattle Center. The space hosts a state-of-the-art live performance studio, complete with high-tech lighting and a video production team. Hundreds of acts have performed at KEXP’s current facility since it opened in 2016. The JamBase Live Video Archive (JBLVA) features nearly 15,000 KEXP videos filmed at its new home, original space and other Seattle venues dating back to 2007. While KEXP hasn’t hosted in-studio performances since the pandemic began, the JBLVA’s collection of 2020 videos from the station includes a bevy of Live On KEXP At Home sessions.
Wilco’s set at The Columbia City Theater for KEXP came just over a month after the band released their ninth studio album, Star Wars. The sextet fit Star Wars tracks “Random Name Generator” and “The Joke Explained” into their 55-minute unplugged performance, but put a focus on classic material right from the start by opening with “Misunderstood.” Other back catalog gems played by Wilco included “I’m Always In Love,” “War On War,” “A Shot In The Arm” and “California Stars.” Additionally, Wilco covered Doug Sahm’s “Give Back The Key To My Heart” and Daniel Johnston’s “True Love Will Find You In The End,” while also performing “We’ve Been Had” from frontman Jeff Tweedy’s days in Uncle Tupelo.
