Yola Releases New Song ‘Hold On’ Featuring Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell & More

Singer-songwriter Yola unveiled “Hold On,” a new single for which a portion of proceeds will benefit MusiCares and National Bailout Collective. “Hold On” features backing vocals from Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby as well as Jason Isbell on guitar and Sheryl Crow on piano.

The song, which Yola performed during last night’s Come Together livestream special, was recorded at RCA’s historic Studio A in Nashville during sessions with producer Dave Cobb that yielded supergroup The Highwomen‘s self-titled debut album. “Hold On” is based on conversations Yola had with her mother about “the systemic racism, colorism and unconscious bias she would experience in life as a Black woman.”

“‘Hold On’ is a conversation between me and the next generation of young black girls. My mother’s advice would always stress caution, that all that glitters isn’t gold, and that my black female role models on TV are probably having a hard time,” Yola said in a statement. “She warned me that I should rethink my calling to be a writer and a singer…. but to me that was all the more reason I should take up this space. ‘Hold On’ is asking the next gen to take up space, to be visible and to show what it looks to be young, gifted and black.”

Yola appears on this weekend’s episode of Austin City Limits and makes her headlining debut at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium on May 11, 2021. Stream “Hold On” below:
