Billie Eilish appeared during Sunday night’s American Music Awards (AMA) to deliver her first-ever live performance of new hit single, “Therefore I Am”. Eilish performed alongside her brother and main collaborator, FINNEAS (on bass) and a drummer for the performance, which followed her through a maze of corridors illuminated in an eerie red hue.
“Therefore I Am” was released on November 12th along with a video, directed by Billie Eilish herself, in which the neon-maned pop star wanders around an empty shopping mall and plunders the various counters in the food court before being chased out by security. Both the AMAs performance and the music video do justice to the brooding song’s defiant attitude (“I’m not your friend, or anything”), the same rebellious, antagonistic tone she struck to great effect on previous hits like “Bad Guy” and “You Should See Me In A Crown“.

Hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, the 2020 American Music Awards (AMA) show on ABC featured a “small but mighty COVID-free audience” alongside cardboard cutouts of the industry A-listers, from Dolly Parton to Beyoncé, which lined the front rows. In addition to Billie Eilish, the show featured performances by Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd (with Kenny G), Katy Perry, Darius Rucker, Jennifer Lopez and Maluma, BTS, Nelly, Bill Biv Devoe, and more.

Billie Eilish has been making the rounds to various awards shows throughout the years. In addition to the Grammy Awards in January, where she swept all four major categories, Eilish performed a striking take on The Beatles‘ “Yesterday” for the “In Memoriam” segment of the Academy Awards in February.
