Dave Grohl Tells Stephen Colbert How A 10-Year-Old Drummer “Wiped The Floor” With Him [Watch]

Dave Grohl joined Stephen Colbert on Thursday night on A Late Show to talk about this year’s scrapped Foo Fighters 25th anniversary plans and what he wound up doing instead, engaging in a bi-continental drum battle with a 10-year-old girl.

Colbert started the conversation by asking about what plans Foo Fighters had in store for this year, which marked the band’s 25th anniversary. As Grohl explained, “We’d been planning for this year… years ago. We sorta thought, well, it’s our 25th anniversary, we’re gonna make our tenth record, we have this world domination scheme to circle the planet a few times and celebrate with the world. We finished making the record, we had the t-shirts printed and pressed and ready to go, and the trucks were filled with equipment, and every thing just stopped.”

“We decided that this was gonna be the year. There were hats, there were wristbands, We went so far as making a 25th anniversary Foo Fighters Coors Light can,” he continued, “So I have pallets of this at the studio.” Grohl laughed as he showed off his currently-in-use Foo Fighters Coors Light tall boy can for the camera.

The host then shifted the conversation to one of the only feel-good stories of this trying year, Grohl’s ongoing, online drum battle with 10-year-old Nandi Bushell. As Grohl explained, “About a year ago, Nirvana’s producer send me a link to her Instagram where she was playing a Nirvana song. She was playing our song, ‘In Bloom’. She’s ten years old, she’s tiny, and she’s just beating the crap out of her drum set. And when she does drum rolls, she screams, so not only is she playing all the parts perfectly, when she does a drum roll, she’s like ‘aghhhh.’ So he sends this to me and I’m like, ‘oh my god, this kid is a force of nature.’”

Then, back in August, Bushell posted a video of her covering Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” and calling Grohl out for a drum battle. As Dave explained, “I thought, aww, isn’t that cute. … And then I get another text, and another text, and another text from all of my friends saying, ‘Dude, you have to respond to this, you have to step up and represent, don’t be a wimp.”

So, I thought, ‘I’ll play something simple and send it to her, [snapsone day later she comes back with her response, and she just wipes the floor with me, she’s kicking my ass! This kid is, like, kicking my but at the drums. So we went back and forth with this drum battle… sometimes you just have to concede defeat.”

The two went on to discuss the “haunted” house where the new Foo Fighters record, Medicine at Midnight, was recorded. As a flummoxed Grohl explained, “It freaked us out, man. The album’s nine songs, ‘cus we just recorded nine songs and got the hell out of there.”
