Happy Birthday Jimi Hendrix: Jimi Hendrix Unplugged On Acoustic Guitar

108

Today, November 27, marks what would have been Jimi Hendrix’s 78th birthday. There’s not much debate about Jimi’s status as the greatest electric guitar player of all time. Hendrix forever changed the way people thought about and played the instrument. But have you ever seem him play the acoustic guitar?

No? That’s because there’s not a lot of footage out there of Hendrix shouldering an acoustic ax. A YouTube account called BomBeats, however, found a couple and compiled them into a single video of Jimi playing acoustic guitar.

The first sees Hendrix handling a 12-string acoustic guitar. The footage features Jimi playing his own arrangement, “Hear My Train A Comin.’” One of the things that set Hendrix’s playing apart was that he had big hands. This allowed him to easily navigate the fretboard. The neck of a 12-string has to be beefy to house all 12 strings and Jimi still makes the neck look small, and the guitar sound sweet. The second video sees Jimi riffing around at what appears to be a party and playing the rock ‘n’ roll classic made popular by Elvis Presley, “Hound Dog.”
