Holly Bowling concluded her Wilderness Sessions livestream series from Moab, Utah on Thursday. The pianist delivered a fully segued set featuring songs from the Phish and Grateful Dead catalogs.
Bowling kicked things off in the desert with the opening strains of the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen,” before getting into improv that began with some twinkling piano ahead of big bass end runs and a “China Cat Sunflower” tease. Next, Holly headed into Phish’s “Mercury” which found its way back into “St. Stephen.”
Holly then included “William Tell Bridge,” a segment of the “St. Stephen Suite” GD used to segue into “The Eleven.” Bowling used “William Tell Bridge” in the same fashion and got into “The Eleven” herself which contained “St. Stephen” callbacks. Holly then delivered an interesting choice for the desert, Phish’s “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing,” before heading into a gorgeous “Stella Blue” to bring the stream and her Wilderness Sessions to a close.
