Mark David Chapman’s John Lennon-Signed Album To Be Auctioned

Goldin Auctions has shared a listing for the very album that John Lennon signed for his murderer, Mark David Chapman, just five hours before his death. The auction for one of rock n’ roll’s `paramount relics will officially begin on November 23rd at 12:00 a.m. with a starting bid of $400,000.

The album, Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, contains Lennon’s signature across Ono’s neck with the year 1980 beneath it. Due to the album being evidence in the law enforcement investigation, there are also police markings on both the front and backside of the sleeve.

This album’s story begins on December 8th, 1980 when Lennon and Ono left their home at The Dakota Apartments and made their way to the Record Plant studios in New York City. Like many fans often would do, Chapman stood outside the apartment building waiting for an opportunity to get an autograph from Lennon, a living rock n’ roll legend. Lennon, of course, obliged before heading to the studio. Roughly five hours later, around 10:50 p.m. ET, as Lennon and Ono returned home, Chapman fired multiple shots at the musician. Doctors at Roosevelt Hospital pronounced Lennon dead on arrival, marking “the end of the greatest phenomenon in popular culture history,” as Goldin Auctions states in the auction’s description.

While we have seen several highly-priced auctions this year already, including a Bill Wyman-used bass guitar, rare White Stripes memorabilia, a Jimi Hendrix guitar, and even Prince‘s “Blue Angel” guitar, Chapman’s Lennon-signed Double Fantasy album will surely fetch far more than any other auction in 2020.  Head to the Goldin Auctions’ website for more information on this listing and to place a bid when the auction goes live on Monday.
