New Orleans’ Tipitina’s Adds Mike Gordon, Tedeschi Trucks Band, More To ‘Save Tip’s’ Benefit

[UPDATE 11/12/20]: Mike Gordon (Phish), Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) have all been added to Tipitina’s Save Tip’s virtual fundraiser set for Saturday, November 14th at 9 p.m. ET.

In addition to a plethora of music, the three-hour stream will also see Gordon and Reznor discuss their experiences and personal memories in connection to the fame New Orleans venue. Tedeschi Trucks Band will also contribute with a cover of Dr. John‘s “Walk On Guilded Splinters” for the event’s tribute to the Night Tripper.

Organizers at New Orleans music venue Tipitina’s have announced plans for a virtual fundraising event scheduled for later this month.

According to Monday’s announcement, the venue’s Save Tip’s virtual fundraiser will treat viewers to a mix of both new, original performances and never-before-released archive concert footage, in addition to exclusive backstage artists interviews, when it airs for free (donations are heavily encouraged) via the venue’s website on Saturday, November 14th, beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

Participating artists include Galactic, Willie Nelson, Widespread Panic, Jon Batiste & Stay Human featuring Trombone Shorty, The Revivalists, Big Freedia, Billy Strings, Tank & The Bangas, Preservation Hall Jazz Band featuring Allen Toussaint, Dumpstaphunk, Ivan Neville, Cory Henry, Manu Chao, The Soul Rebels, Dinosaur Jr., St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and more. The archive concert footage will highlight past performances from the late Fats Domino, Dr. John, and The Radiators featuring Gregg Allman, while tributes to Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, and Art Neville are also planned.

“In late 2018, our band took a huge leap of faith to purchase Tipitina’s,” Galactic’s Robert Mercurio added with Monday’s announcement. “It was not because we wanted to own a venue, it was because we had a chance to save our favorite one in the world. But now we could really use some help to keep saving this national treasure. So in true New Orleans fashion, we decided to throw a hell of a party to celebrate this musical institution.”

Mercurio was featured in a profile interview published to NOLA.com back in July in which he detailed the serious financial strains being felt by Tipitina’s – along with nearly every other independent venue across the country – since the shutdown of all concerts, tours, and events in March.

“The margins are so thin,” Mercurio told the regional news site over the summer in regards to the venue’s inability to cover the overhead operating costs amid the concert industry shutdown. “We were succeeding, but just barely, over our first year and a half of owning it. Not being able to hold shows, it’s going to become increasingly impossible for us to make ends meet … PPP has been able to keep us going these last few months, but that’s going to run out soon.”

Tipitina’s recently launched its Tipitina’s TV streaming series which featured select virtual performances from Galactic, Rebirth Brass Band, Anders Osborne, Tank & The Bangas, Samantha Fish, and The Radiators throughout August and September.

Additionally, the venue has teamed up with Fandiem for donation-based sweepstakes with prizes that include an all-expenses-paid trip to New Orleans where winners will have VIP access to the first return show at Tipitina’s, access to a New Orleans-themed catered soundcheck, band meet and greet, merch, and a virtual backstage hang with Galactic’s Stanton Moore and Robert Mercurio.
