Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder made his debut on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on Monday live from his home studio in Washington. Vedder discussed a number of topics with Stern and offered a few performances, including a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart.”
Howard noted “Keep Me In Your Heart” is one of his favorite songs and recalled an episode of The Late Show With David Letterman in which a terminally ill Zevon performed the tune. Eddie Vedder famously covered “Keep Me In Your Heart” in honor of Letterman when the late-night talk show host was honored as a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize For American Humor in 2017. Stern asked Vedder to perform the song and Eddie turned in a gorgeous version of “Keep Me In Your Heart.”
Stern asked about the Pearl Jam classic “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” to which Vedder responded by discussing the origin of the song. Eddie went on to perform a truncated version of the song from 1993’s Versus. He followed by explaining how “shapes” just come to him and gave an example with a brief rendition of “Sometimes,” a song Pearl Jam originally released on 1996’s No Code.
One part of Eddie’s appearance was devoted to talk of his friendship with Chris Cornell. “I’ve had to be somewhat in denial,” Vedder said of the Soundgarden frontman’s death. “I don’t even feel like I had a choice. I was just terrified where I’d go if I allowed myself to feel what I needed to feel.” He also told stories of going on hiking adventures and trips mountain biking with Cornell.
Additional topics hit up were Vedder’s hope the election results in a unified country, the advice he gave Bradley Cooper before the actor starred in A Star Is Born and a recurring bit on Letterman.
