Phish Fits ‘Manteca’ & ‘Dog Faced Boy’ Within ‘Stash’ On Fall Tour 1995

This year marks 25 years since Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25 years (read a note on Fall 1997 here). The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.

Phish played their first and only show at the University Of Central Florida Arena in Orlando, Florida on this date during Fall Tour 1995. The concert was one of four performed by the band on November 14 over the past 25 years, which includes a visit to Cincinnati in 1998 featuring Phish’s lone cover of “So Lonely” by The Police. A 40-minute “Stash” incorporating “Manteca” and “Dog Faced Boy” was the highlight of the Phish show in Orlando and stands among the best versions of the song in Phish history.

The quartet opened with “Chalk Dust Torture,” a fitting choice for a show on a college campus, and a tight run through “Foam.” Particularly gorgeous versions of “Billy Breathes” and “Divided Sky” followed before the tour’s second “Esther” gave way to the six-month-old “Free.” Guitarist Trey Anastasio starred on the “Julius” that came next and then the band went acoustic for a cover of “I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome” ahead of a set-closing “Cavern.”

A high-octane “Maze” kicked off the second set along with “Gumbo.” Phish then began the instant classic “Stash.” The stellar rendition of the A Picture Of Nectar gem has a special feel right from the start as Anastasio plucks a descending riff unlike any other in the song history during the chorus and leading into the jam. Trey continued to use the riff as an entryway to a full-band jam on Chicago’s “25 Or 6 To 4.”

The guitarist gave the first hints of “Manteca” during the “25 Or 6 To 4” jam but instead the band would return to typical “Stash” terrain. Phish proceeded normally in building “Stash” to a tension-and-release peak until the 13-minute mark, when the four-piece went “Type II.” Anastasio moved over to the mini-percussion setup that was part of his rig for the tour while Page McConnell funked it up on Clavinet and Mike Gordon focused on slap bass works. Trey caught on to a “Manteca” groove his band mates laid down, picked up his guitar and Phish embarked on their first version the Dizzy Gillespie classic in 85 shows.

Phish followed “Manteca” by connecting on a chord progression that wasn’t too far from “25 Or 6 To 4.” The band went full throttle for a minute before they brought the improv back to where “Stash” had left off. The quartet continued exploring and landed on a blissful theme akin to “Esther.” More brazen psychedelia followed as Phish once again veered from “Stash” territory. A bit of ambience came next with Anastasio using the opportunity to sing “Dog Faced Boy,” a song from 1994’s Hoist, over a trippy progression.

Phish wasn’t done yet, as they set the arena ablaze in a wash of dark and eerie sounds while Trey swung his megaphone like a windmill. The feedback-heavy segment gave way to the theme of “Stash” for the section that usually ends the song. A pretty “Strange Design” followed before Phish delivered a strong version of “You Enjoy Myself” highlighted by a jam on Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” A pairing of “The Wedge” and “Rocky Top” served as the evening’s encore.
