Phoebe Bridgers Covers Merle Haggard For Yearly Charity Single [Listen]

Phoebe Bridgers continued her yearly tradition of releasing holiday covers for charity on Monday with her rendition of the Merle Haggard song, “If We Make It Through December”.

The track, taken off Haggard’s 1973 record Merle Haggard’s Christmas Present, serves to bring a volatile and exhausting year to a close. Joined only by Ethan Gruska on piano, Bridgers does what she does best by giving the song of desperation and hardship and an added layer of melancholy.

The opening lyric “If we make it through December, everything’s gonna be alright I know,” is emblematic of the spirit many have developed throughout the ongoing pandemic, as the United States continues to see record spikes with no signs of stopping heading into the holiday season.

Proceeds from this year’s single will go to benefit the Downtown Women’s Center. Established in Los Angeles in 1978, the Downtown Women’s Center was the first permanent supportive housing provider for women in the United States. Today, the non-profit organization continues its mission by providing critical services to women in crisis including housing, counseling, education programs, and more.
