Pink Talking Fish Fits Guns N’ Roses & Slayer Covers Into Halloween Set In New Hampshire

90

Pink Talking Fish delivered covers from Guns N’ Roses and Slayer during their Halloween concert for the finale of Swanzey, New Hampshire’s Drive In Live series. Twiddle’s Mihali and Neighbor would help get the holiday show underway.

Mihali kicked off the evening and would welcome PTF guitarist Cal Kehoe during the closing medley, which was based around Bush’s “Glycerine.” Neighbor — a side project of PTF keyboardist Richard James and also includes Lyle Brewer (guitar), Dan Kelly (bass) and Dean Johnston (drums) — then took the stage. Neighbor had a horn section in tow for the special occasion that featured Matt Wayne (alto sax) Rob Krahn (trombone) and Lee Ross (tenor sax) as well as vocalists Renee Dupuis and Sadie Cook. Neighbor would offer takes on Litte Feat’s “Spanish Moon, The Who’s “Eminence Front” and more.

PTF kicked off their Halloween set by emerging from coffins which carried spooky plays on each band members’ name a la The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror credits: Cal Kehoe was “Kill Kehoe,” bassist Eric Gould was “Eric Ghould,” drummer Zack Burwick was “Death Rogen” and Richard James was “Scary Barry.” Dressed as skeletons, PTF got the music going with a spooky space section before a fitting “Buried Alive” from Phish followed by Talking Heads’ “Life After Wartime” and Pink Floyd’s “One Of These Days,” completing the trifecta of the band’s namesakes.

PTF then got into some Ween with “Roses Are Free” (a song Phish covers) which they changed the lyric “Throw the pumpkin at the tree” to “Smash the pumpkin at the tree” before heading into Smashing Pumpkins’ “Cherub Rock.” The set also included Halloween highlights like the Phantom of the Opera-eque Syd Barrett era Floyd tune “Astronomy Domine,” Phish’s “Ghost” and Talking Heads’“Psycho Killer” (which contained a Carole King tease) as well as mashups of Phish’s “Big Black Furry Creature From Mars” and Slayer’s “Reigning Blood” and the Vermont quartet’s “Carini” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” to close out the set. PTF would reemerge as the night got chilly for an apt cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” before bringing the evening to a close with Phish’s “First Tube.”
