While industries around the world have ground to a halt as a result of the pandemic, Jimkata are here to reminisce on the bygone days of the gig economy. On new track “Blessings In Disguise”, the recently-reunited electro-rock trio reflects on the struggle to stay afloat through multiple side hustles.

Even before COVID-19 put a stop to all bands’ touring schedules, the guys in Jimkata still held down offstage occupations in order to pay the bills. Part ode to the many sacrifices artists make to pursue their craft, part warning shot about the ever-rising levels of income inequality, “Blessings In Disguise” takes a multi-faceted look at what it takes to be a “working artist” in the truest sense of the word.

Coming out of the gate with their recognizable synth-wave ambience, Jimkata show that they never lost step during their two-and-a-half year hiatus. Alongside an animation style that is vaguely Monty Python-like, the outfit is back to its old tricks. Set to appear on Bonfires—the band’s seventh album overall and first since 2016—”Blessings In Disguise” pieces together those familiar futuristic synth hooks and pop leanings with the group’s ever-relatable lyrics.

As vocalist and guitarist Evan Friedell tells Live For Live Music of “Blessings In Disguise”,

Throughout this journey of being in a band, all of us have had to find ways to make ends meet in order to keep doing what we do. We’ve all dealt with the emotional swings of feeling on top of the world on stage on Saturday night to scrubbing floors or scraping paint on Monday. But the plus side is that I’ve gotten to meet so many different people over the years working different jobs that inform who I am as a person. After a while you start to realize you’re not alone in the grind and to count whatever blessings you do have. We’re all just trying to get by in this age of growing income inequality and to be able to do what you love in the midst of that is special. This song is sort of an ode to the age of the “side hustle” and the “gig economy” and for everyone who feels like they’re pushing a boulder up a mountain everyday trying to get by.
