The Smashing Pumpkins returned with two new singles on Thursday, “Dulcet In E” and “Purple Blood”, ahead of their forthcoming album, Cyr. Out on November 27th, 2020, this double album marks the the second record from the mostly-reunited Pumpkins lineup—excluding bassist D’Arcy Wretzky—following 2018’s Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1/LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.
These will likely mark the final singles shared ahead of the album’s full release on Friday. So far, The Smashing Pumpkins have already released “Wrath“, “Wyttch“, “Ramona“, “The Colour of your Love“, “Confessions of a Dopamine Addict“, “Birch Grove”, “Anno Satana“, and album’s title track.

These two songs help further display the range shown on the 20-track offering as the band toggles between multiple stylistic planes. On “Dulcet In E” frontman Billy Corgan takes centerstage—even more so than usual—and enters singer-songwriter mode. The soft, acoustic feel presents the lighter side of The Smashing Pumpkins that can foster just as much mental anguish with an acoustic guitar as an overdrive-laden electric one.
Conversely, on “Purple Blood” the band reignites many of the futuristic, techno-pop stylings found on some of the previously-released singles. The sparse track is a far cry from “Dulcet In E”, which is perhaps why the band chose to distribute them together, and further shows the artistic development of the Pumpkins. While it may carry similar tones to some of the other singles, “Purple Blood” still shows that the band is exploring something new with Cyr as a whole.
