The Smashing Pumpkins Release “Dulcet In E”, “Purple Blood” [Listen]

107

The Smashing Pumpkins returned with two new singles on Thursday, “Dulcet In E” and “Purple Blood”, ahead of their forthcoming album, Cyr. Out on November 27th, 2020, this double album marks the the second record from the mostly-reunited Pumpkins lineup—excluding bassist D’Arcy Wretzky—following 2018’s Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1/LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.

These will likely mark the final singles shared ahead of the album’s full release on Friday. So far, The Smashing Pumpkins have already released “Wrath“, “Wyttch“, “Ramona“, “The Colour of your Love“, “Confessions of a Dopamine Addict“, “Birch Grove”, “Anno Satana“, and album’s title track.

These two songs help further display the range shown on the 20-track offering as the band toggles between multiple stylistic planes. On “Dulcet In E” frontman Billy Corgan takes centerstage—even more so than usual—and enters singer-songwriter mode. The soft, acoustic feel presents the lighter side of The Smashing Pumpkins that can foster just as much mental anguish with an acoustic guitar as an overdrive-laden electric one.

Conversely, on “Purple Blood” the band reignites many of the futuristic, techno-pop stylings found on some of the previously-released singles. The sparse track is a far cry from “Dulcet In E”, which is perhaps why the band chose to distribute them together, and further shows the artistic development of the Pumpkins. While it may carry similar tones to some of the other singles, “Purple Blood” still shows that the band is exploring something new with Cyr as a whole.

“Dulcet In E” Lyrics

From our tree swings an apple

A pear or a candle

That once caught captive of your love

Is asked by dear time to sway

Is asked by dear time to sway

Never held, the memory unto

Our edifice as serves you

Is singly rhapsody and koan

Where a heart like mine belongs

Where a heart like mine belongs

No flower outlives its raindrop

No tower outlives its hilltop

I’m necromancer and your balm

Is it hearth of silent knowledge

From fount of easy bondage

I’m never more than you could want

Where a heart like mine belongs

Where a heart like mine belongs

Yes, where a heart like mine belongs

From our tree, swings an apple

A pear or a candle

That once caught is captive of your love

From our tree swings an apple

A pear or a candle

That once caught is captive of your love

No flower outlives its raindrop

No tower outlives its hilltop

I’m necromancer and your balm

Where a heart like mine belongs

Where a heart like mine belongs

Yes, where a heart like mine belongs

“Purple Blood” Lyrics

I’m in love with your god

I’m in love with your fear

By the touch of your hand I’m far from here

Oh, for sunny days

When life was flat in breaks

It might love come what may

Shot to ground

Set it off

Like your phoenix I will fly

From dread dawns to sky

I’m in love with your god

Fever by your side

Sun is so you cannot rise

Fever by your side

Sun is so you cannot rise

I’m in love with your god

I’m in love with said fear

By the flesh of your thumb I’m lost but near

But, oh, for sunny days

Shot to ground

Set it off

Like your phoenix I will fly

From dread dawns to sky

I’m in love with your god

Fever by your side

Sun is so you cannot rise

Fever by your side

Sun is so you cannot rise

Hunger greets my fleas

So solace thunder agony

A fever by your side

Sun is so you cannot rise
