Tom Morello Acknowledges Staggering Irony Of Trump Supporters Dancing To ‘Killing In the Name’

94

After four years of ceaseless gloating from MAGA types, it’s not a particularly fantastic time to be one of them.

Over the weekend, as the world was still waiting to hear the results of the US federal election, a few Trump supporters were spotted in Philadelphia clad in Trump merch and waving flags while dancing to, incredibly, Rage Against the Machine‘s ‘Killing In the Name’.

The somehow-not-The Onion irony barely needs to be pointed out, but given that the band’s politically-charged 1992 single features lyrics like “Some of those that work forces / Are the same that burn crosses,” repeated over and over, it’s a decidedly odd choice of song.

After the clip was posted, Rage guitarist Tom Morello caught wind of the incident on Twitter and responded with exactly the kind of absolutely king shit brevity the situation called for, writing, “Not exactly what we had in mind.”

It’s not the first time Morello has had to point out the cognitive dissonance of jamming out to a band like RATM while supporting everything they explicitly stand against.

Back in June, the guitarist responded to an ex-fan who, in a since-deleted tweet, told Morello, “Music is my sanctuary and the last thing I want to hear is political BS when I’m listening to music.”

Morello responded by quoting the tweet, replying “What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN’T contain ‘political BS’? I need to know so I can delete it from the catalogue.”
