Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders Cover Stevie Wonder In New Excerpt From ‘GarciaLive Volume 15’ [Listen]

On Tuesday, Garica Family Provisions shared yet another track from the upcoming GarciaLive Volume 15 release, on which Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders cover Stevie Wonders‘ “I Was Made To Love Her”. Available on December 4th, this latest edition of the archival series features Garcia and Saunders’ full performance from May 21st, 1971 at Keystone Korner in San Francisco.

Also on the bill with the guitarist and keyboardist that evening was drummer Bill Vitt who helped round out the trio. Though frequent Jerry Garcia Band bassist John Kahn was not present that evening, saxophonist Martin Fierro did come in and out of the performance to provide some added texture.

Coming in at the mid-point of set one, Garcia and company are already smoking hot as they drop straight into the groove between the Grateful Dead guitarist and his faithful compatriot on the organ. This instrumental take on Wonder’s 1967 single pops as the trio melds together with Garcia leading the way until about three minutes in when Fierro comes roaring in.

While the at-times expansive roster of the Jerry Garcia Band allowed the guitarist to pursue great heights of soul music, this three-occasionally-four-piece approach gets right to the root of what so many Garcia enthusiasts are clamoring after: the jams, the whole jams, and nothing but the jams.
