Midnight North Infuses “The Sailor & The Sea” With Marvin Gaye At Georgia Comes Alive [Watch]

89

On Saturday, December 26th, 50+ artists and hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world came together for Georgia Comes Alive, a virtual music festival aimed at promoting voter participation in Georgia’s critical Senate runoff elections on January 5th, 2021.

One of the many acts who participated was Midnight North, which features Grahame Lesh, the son of Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh. The younger Lesh pulled double duty during Georgia Comes Alive as he also appeared with Phil Lesh & Friends to perform “Uncle John’s Band” earlier in the program.

With Midnight North, however, it was Grahame’s time to shine as he led his band through the original, “The Sailor & The Sea”. As Lesh’s infectious disco guitar rhythm coalesced with the sturdy backbeat from Nathan Graham (who also took part in the Phil & Friends performance), the stage was set for the vocal conversation between Lesh and Elliott Peck. The groove into which Midnight North entered was intoxicating and, before you have a chance to notice, the band seamlessly segued into Marvin Gaye‘s “Heard It Through The Grapevine” after about three-and-a-half minutes of the five-minute performance. The detour was a brief one, however, as before long Midnight North transitioned back into the original rhythm to close out the tune.
