Neil Young was one of many artists and celebrities to take part in the Camp-A-Thon Campfire fundraising stream for The Painted Turtle on Tuesday. Hosted by Danny DeVito, the eight-hour stream also saw appearances and performances from Herb Alpert, Josh Groban, George Lopez, Ricki Lake, Daryl Hannah, and more.
Established in 1999 by Paul Newman and Page Adler, among others, The Painted Turtle is a summer camp for children with serious medical needs. Located in Lake Hughes, CA, families receive no bill for their child’s stay at The Painted Turtle as the dedicated staff pursues its mission of allowing all kids to just be kids.
For his performance, which came following an introduction from DeVito, Young dug up “Love Is A Rose” from his recently-released “lost” 1975 album, Homegrown. Joined by his wife and director, Daryl Hannah, who also contributed to the Camp-A-Thon stream in her own right, Young’s performance looks eerily similar to his Fireside Sessions series he started at the onset of the pandemic. Though Young has not released a new edition of the Fireside Sessions since June, this could perhaps be a warning signal that, with the onset of winter, more sessions could be on the horizon.
For the finale of his two-song set, Young went with “Sugar Mountain”, a song Rolling Stone notes he wrote on his 19th birthday in 1964. From his rustic cabin high above Telluride, CO, “Sugar Mountain” rang out as a proper tune for—once again—hunkering down in the face of the seemingly never-ending winter that is COVID-19.
