Run The Jewels Become Action Figure Heroes In “Walking In The Snow” Video [Watch]

Run The Jewels have released a new music video for “Walking In The Snow” that turns the familiar hip-hop duo into 1980s-style action figures. The song comes from the group’s critically-acclaimed fourth album, RTJ4, released in June.

This video comes following the release of “No Save Point“, which the duo—comprised of Killer Mike and El-P—recorded for the video game Cyberpunk 2077. The two MCs also appeared at the virtual Adult Swim Festival in an exclusive interview to talk about the game and the inspiration for the song.

Directed by Chris Hopewell, the video for “Walking In The Snow” employs stop-motion animation and retro action figures to tell a story that’s much more realistic than it appears. As Killer Mike and El-P team up with the legions of toys oppressed by the evil ice king, the two gifted linguists opine about modern problems plaguing society and even make a reference to Eric Garner by invoking his dying words, “I can’t breathe.” Given the serious subject matter of the song, Hopewell said that directing the video required toeing a fine line.

“Everyone was very aware of the gravity of the subject matter and RTJ didn’t want to be too obvious or on the nail with the visuals, so we went with an Eighties style fantasy look with evil snow warriors and their icy king oppressing the bedroom toys,” Hopewell said in a statement. “It was great to be involved with a project with a positive vibe to end a pretty f*cked-up year.”
