The JamBase Podcast: Jonathan Wilson

103

Episode 73 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of Osiris Media, features an interview with singer-songwriter Jonathan Wilson. Wilson was at his home in California when he spoke recently with JamBase’s Andy Kahn.

The interview occurred a few weeks ago, right before the release of the deluxe version of Wilson’s 2020 album, Dixie Blur. Wilson, who often plays all of the instruments on his records, recruited an all-star backing for the bluegrass influenced Dixie Blur. He talked about working with Wilco’s Pat Sansone, who produced the album, which was recorded in Nashville at the suggestion of Steve Earle.

Wilson described the process of lining up the stellar group of musicians who contributed to Dixie Blur, including pulling renowned fiddler Mark O’Connor out of retirement for the sessions. Jonathan detailed his and his family’s relationship with bluegrass music and how his North Carolina upbringing helped inform the album.

The discussion touched on Wilson’s experience performing as a member of Roger Waters‘ touring band. Wilson explained his familiarity with Pink Floyd, how he landed the gig in Waters’ band and what it’s like playing in front of huge audiences around the world. Wilson also revealed he’s already at work on his new album and that he has been producing the next Father John Misty album with his frequent collaborator Josh Tillman.
