As the album’s title track, “Cyr” acts as a beacon for what’s to come on the group’s 11th album by ringing out as an aggressively-modern industrial pop nightmare. The song also lends itself thematically to the nature of the band’s remote late-night performance, as Corgan wrote the song in response to the pent-up feelings of isolation brought on by quarantine.

“Cyr” presents the band shouting out to the rest of the world, confirming that—yes—they still do exist. Upon the song’s initial release, Corgan characterized it by saying, “To me it stands as both hopeful and dismissive of what is and isn’t possible with faith.”

Even with the 20-track, double album off the docket, The Smashing Pumpkins still have plenty to keep them busy. Back in October Corgan announced that the band intends to record a sequel to 2000’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, as well as mount a theatrical 25th-anniversary tour behind the album once such a feat is possible. The band’s principal songwriter also stated that Cyr is merely part two of a three-album cycle that began with Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1/LP: No Past. No Present. No Future. which will conclude with a third album released at a later date.
