On Friday, Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where the duo performed “The Problem”. Shires initially released the single featuring her husband and musical partner back in September, 2020 to celebrate International Safe Abortion Day.
Shires and Isbell’s Tonight Show performance came just hours after the release of “Our Problem“. Earlier in the day, Shires shared a reimagination of the track featuring a host of female musicians, including Angie Stone, Cyndi Lauper, K.Flay, Lilly Hiatt, Linda Perry, Morgane Stapleton, Nona Hendryx, Peaches, Valerie June, and Sheryl Crow.

Like “Our Problem”, this Tonight Show rendition of “The Problem” differed from the original. Instead of including the piano, drums, and bass that appeared on the studio recording, Shires and Isbell performed as a stripped-down duet. Isbell slowly strummed his acoustic guitar as the two traded vocals throughout the first part of the song. Donning a shirt that said “My Body My Choice”, Shires sang with clear emotion, following the tempo set by Isbell’s guitar. While this version arrived a bit shorter than the five-minute studio original, Shires still found time to show off her skills on the fiddle. Following the last chorus, Shires put the fiddle to her chin, raised the bow, and carried the song to its end point with emotionally moving phrases.
