Friday, January 22nd marks the 48th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade, which ruled that the United States protects a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restrictions. To celebrate this milestone, Amanda Shires recruited a stable of talented female singers for an updated version of her pro-choice song, “The Problem“, poignantly titled “Our Problem”.
Released back in September to mark International Safe Abortion Day, “The Problem” found Shires performing the song as a duet with her husband and musical partner, Jason Isbell. While Isbell is still present on “Our Problem”, he has taken a backseat vocally and just provides guitar. Instead, Shires takes full vocal reign alongside Angie Stone, Cyndi Lauper, K.Flay, Lilly Hiatt, Linda Perry, Morgane Stapleton, Nona Hendryx, Peaches, and Valerie June. As if that wasn’t enough girl power, Sheryl Crow also plays bass on the track.

“I’m very grateful to have so many of my sisters joining me for ‘Our Problem.’ The issue of women’s rights and reproductive health affects us all,” Shires says in the video’s description. “‘Our Problem’ represents women of all generations, musical genres, and communities. Music has the power to bridge gaps and bring people together and I hope that ‘Our Problem’ reminds you that we are all in this world together and that we can be there for one another no matter what. You are never alone and I’M ON YOUR SIDE.”
In addition to the new singers, the song also features an added second verse as the women hand off vocal duties like a baton, “Are you feeling well/ Are you gonna tell/ How long have you known/ Did you tell him, does he know/ You knew there was something wrong/ Just a few weeks along / You told him and he broke it off/ And the money won’t cover the cost.” Along with Isbell on guitar and Crow on bass, Peter Levin—who fans will remember from the I So Lounging streaming series—shows up on keys, as well as Chris Powell on drums.
