Death Cab For Cutie served as the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday where the band performed a remote rendition of TLC favorite, “Waterfalls”.
While the 1995 hit by the hip-hop/R&B trio may seem like an out-of-left-field choice for the early-’00s alt-rock outfit, “Waterfalls” was just one of many unusual covers included on Death Cab For Cutie’s recent release, The Georgia E.P. Released ahead of January’s Georgia Senate runoff elections, the five-track EP is comprised of covers of songs made famous by artists from Georgia and proceeds generated from sales benefit Fair Fight Action.
In addition to “Waterfalls”, Death Cab For Cutie’s The Georgia E.P. features renditions of “King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1” (Neutral Milk Hotel), “Fall On Me” (R.E.M.), “Flirted With You All My Life” (Vic Chesnutt), and “Metal Heart” (Cat Power).
Death Cab For Cutie appeared on Kimmel in the familiar, split-screen format we’ve seen throughout the ongoing pandemic. In Death Cab’s hands, “Waterfalls” takes one a more contemplative, indie ambiance, thrusting the wistful nature of the song’s lyrics to the forefront.

“We’ve recorded this collection of music as both a celebration of this monumental achievement, and to provide support for the fight ahead – in this case the upcoming special Senate election in January,” the band said in a statement released along with the project’s initial announcement. “With control of the Senate on the line, and with it the fate of so many things we care about, from climate action, to criminal justice reform, to voting rights, and everything in between – the stakes are uniquely high this time around.”
