The year 2020 was supposed to be huge for Ty Segall‘s stoner metal trio Fuzz. The band released III, its first new album in five years, and was set to support it with the group’s first North American tour in as many years. Unfortunately, COVID-19 laid waste to that summer tour which was postponed to winter 2021 and has now officially moved once again to spring 2022. While this is a crushing blow to the band’s many headbanging followers, Fuzz has offered some solace with a new live set filmed at Gold Diggers Sound in Los Angeles, CA.
Filmed in eerie black and white, the set consists of tracks from the band’s latest studio outing, as well as a throwback to its 2013 debut. Starting off with “Nothing People”, the band explodes out of the gate with the distorted chaotic energy emblematic of a live concert. With the video clocking in at 23-minutes, Fuzz takes plenty of time to give each song a proper telling with frenzied improvisation.

That level of chaos nudges up further on the proceeding “Mirrors” as guitarist Charles Moothart co-ops vocals with Segall. With Segall’s erratic drumming, it sounds as if the entire song itself may fall apart at any moment with fevered drum crashes and disjointed guitar and bass fills. Yet the structural integrity of the track persists while the band is still able to give it a hell of a wobble. On “Close Your Eyes” things return to a bit more conventional form with digestible rock power chords arranged in a recognizable rhythm. The highlight of the set, however, comes at the end with “Loose Sutures”.
Taken from Fuzz’s 2013 self-titled debut, the difference between this lofi rocker and the preceding three tracks from III is palpable. The sludgy scream of stringed instruments paired up with the chaotic crashes of the drum form the base of raw energy that made Fuzz a cult favorite eight years ago. Given a full, 11-minute telling “Loose Sutures” encapsulates all of the musical highs and lows that combine the excitement of a punk rock act with the crunchy grooves of a stoner metal band.
