An interview with G. Love is featured on the latest episode of Eric Krasno Plus One, a podcast from JamBase partner Osiris Media. G. Love chats with host Eric Krasno about his influences, his reaction to his first Grammy nomination, mistakes he’s made over the course of his 30-year career and a variety of other topics.
Kraz’s friendship with G. Love dates back decades and includes collaborations featured on the latter’s 2014 LP, Sugar. The musician born Garrett Dutton recalls how he started playing harmonica and when he began to fuse hip-hop and blues. The pair also discuss their participation in a Jimi Hendrix tribute concert.
Garrett tells the story behind his “G. Love” moniker and how his decision to pursue a career in music rather than focus on getting a degree. Dutton and Krasno explain how much easier it was to devote time to their craft before the days of social media. “Writing and creating something original requires solitude,” Eric says. G. Love dives into his time in Boston, the formation of G. Love & Special Sauce and the success of their self-titled debut album.
G. Love goes on to discuss his friendships and musical relationships with The Roots, Jack Johnson and Ben Harper. Both musicians detail a series of decisions regarding their careers they wish they could do over. Dutton reveals his band was given the opportunity to open for The Black Crowes, but they turned down the offer.
In 2020, G. Love released the guest-filled album The Juice, which was produced by Keb’ Mo’. Dutton discusses the disappointment in not being able to tour behind the release and the excitement when he learned the LP was nominated for a 2021 Grammy in the Best Comtemporary Blues Album category. “We would literally being flying to start our 29th year of touring today,” G. Love tells Kraz. Advice received from Keb’ Mo’, how he found the music of Led Zeppelin and what was planned for 2020 are just a few of the other topics G. Love covers in the chat with Eric Krasno.
