Mt. Joy Highlights Activist Ethos With “New President” & “Sheep” At Georgia Comes Alive [Watch]

82

On Saturday, December 26th, 50+ artists and hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world came together for Georgia Comes Alive, a virtual music festival aimed at promoting voter participation in Georgia’s Senate runoff elections on January 5th, 2021, which saw a record-breaking voter turnout.

Among the many artists to take part in the nine-hour livestream marathon were Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper of LA-based folk-rock outfit Mt. Joy who performed a pair of original tunes with political undertones. The duo, both wielding acoustic guitars, kicked off the performance with Mt. Joy’s latest single, “New President”, an eerily beautiful song that mixes direct messages (“We need a new President”) with more delicately rendered appeals for unity (“And we should fall in love again”).

From there, Quinn carried his haunting vocals over to “Sheep”, a cut from the band’s self-titled debut album which was penned in the wake of the killing of Freddie Gray by Baltimore police in 2015 (“Oh, it haunts me, tell me it haunts you too You cut it up, you cut it up, but it’s still the red white and the blue”).

“It’s something that we’re trying more and more,” Quinn once told Penn Live of “Sheep”, “To make our voices heard in terms of America crumbling before our eyes right now and trying to part of the solution ”
