Phish will release an official audio of the band’s August 17, 1993 concert in Kansas City, Kansas this Friday, January 29 through LivePhish.com. The show featured in the first Phish live archival release of 2021 was announced by the band’s archivist, Kevin Shapiro on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio.
August 1993 is considered among the best month in the quartet’s history and their visit to Kansas City’s Memorial Hall came smack dab in the middle of the month. Phish had previously played Memorial Hall on April 13, 1993 and went on to perform at the venue again on June 13, 1994.
Phish’s August 1993 performance in Kansas City is chock full of highlights. A 19-minute “David Bowie” that followed “Also Sprach Zarathrustra,” aka “2001,” to open the second set stands as the improvisational centerpiece of the evening. Raging versions of “Divided Sky” and “Fluffhead” are standouts of the first set along with a particularly poignant “Fast Enough For You.”
Other memorable moments from the band’s forthcoming live archival release include an extended “You Enjoy Myself” filled with fretboard fireworks from guitarist Trey Anastasio, a Jon Fishman sung cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain” and the opening sequence of “Wilson” and “Llama.” Audio of Phish’s August 17, 1993 concert will be available for download and streaming starting at midnight ET this Friday. Replays of Shapiro’s From The Archives episode featuring tracks from the show will air throughout the week on Phish Radio.
