Umphrey’s McGee Plays First-Ever Concert In South Bend, On This Day In 1998

90

Happy birthday Umphrey’s McGee!

The prog-rock/jam outfit performed its first-ever show at Bridget McGuire’s Filling Station in South Bend, IN, 26 years ago today on January 21st, 1998. Though no recording of the band’s historic performance remains, fans can still admire the two-set, two-encore setlist that has been archived from their live debut.

The band played a number of originals that night, and a handful of them—including “FF”, “Phil’s Farm,” “Divisions”, and more—are still in rotation to this day.

The show that night naturally featured a lot of covers, including a number of Phish originals like “Bathtub Gin” and the “Mike’s Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove” combination. Umphrey’s also worked in some classic rock staples like Led Zeppelin‘s “Moby Dick” and Talking Heads‘ “Burning Down The House”. Cap that off with some Def Leppard “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, and you’ve got yourself a memorable night in Indiana.

Take a look at the full setlist from the band’s first-ever concert below, via All Things Umphrey’s. While there’s no live audio from this debut, there is a full audio recording from the band’s second-ever performance at South Bend’s Club 23 a week later on January 29th, 1998, which fans can listen to here.
