Watch The Grateful Dead’s ‘View From The Vault’ Concert Film

74

The Grateful Dead released the premiere installment in their View From The Vault archival video series in June of 2000. The concert film documents GD’s July 8, 1990 show from Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. This week’s edition of the Dead’s All The Years Live video series features “Row Jimmy” from the Three Rivers concert. In July 2020, the band shared the entire Pittsburgh View From The Vault concert, which is the subject of this week’s Throwback Thursday.

The stellar show gets underway with “Touch Of Grey” before “Greatest Story Ever Told” followed by “Jack-a-Roe” and “New Minglewood Blues.” The “Row Jimmy” comes next. Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux detailed songs from the first set along with the second set “Eyes Of The World” in his notes accompanying the “Row Jimmy” video. Read David’s words below:

When the Pittsburgh show from 7/8/90 was selected for release as the first View From The Vault, the excellent first set had a couple of major highlights from 1973’s Wake Of The Flood: the set-closing “Let It Grow,” and this “Row Jimmy” from earlier in the set (to round out the Wake trio, they’d also play “Eyes Of The World” in the second set). Asked in an interview what was his favourite song to play with the Grateful Dead, Jerry replied, “Row Jimmy.”

The second set “Eyes” — which features some trippy visuals — then heads into “Estimated Prophet” which in turn gets into “Terrapin Station” ahead of the “Drums” and “Space” section. The entire band returns for “I Need A Miracle,” “Wang Dang Doodle,” “Black Peter,” “Throwing Stones” and the second set closer “Turn On Your Lovelight” before bringing the concert to a close with Bob Dylan’s “Knocking On Heaven’s Door.”
