Apple Music Black History Month Playlist

122

For the final weekend of Black History Month, JamBase presents this year’s Apple Music playlist for this edition of Saturday Stream. Apple’s editors’ description of the collection states:

Every February, we take time to acknowledge the broad influence of Black Americans throughout history. The Black American experience is particularly dynamic in that its stories owe just as much to region and era as they do to familial heritage and personal circumstance. Since the very beginning, so much of this has been chronicled through music.

The Black History Month playlist is a collection of these many vantage points and their vessels, from those dispensed over strings and horns to those unfurled over beats and scratches. Celebrate Black History Month with a journey through the sound of the Black experience.

Much like last week’s installment featuring playlists created by Spotify the Apple Music Black History Month playlist is a journey from the roots of the blues, jazz, R&B, soul, rock and other genres that have informed today’s popular music, through the present and the artists that follow in the groundbreaking paths those legendary musicians paved.

Apple Music’s Black History Month playlist presents such powerful songs as “Forbidden Fruit” sung by Billie Holiday, “A Change Is Gonna Come” sung by Sam Cooke, “Say It Loud (I’m Black And I’m Proud) by James Brown, “To Be Young Gifted And Black” by Nina Simone, “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” by Gil Scott-Heron, “I’ll Take You There” by The Staples Singers and “We Shall Overcome” sung by Mahalia Jackson, among others.

The collection also highlights songs by Prince, D’Angelo, Janelle Monáe, Outkast, Tracy Chapman, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, JAY-Z, 2Pac, Anderson .Paak, Solange, Kendric Lamar and many others across the playlist’s 100 tracks.
