Happy Birthday Alice Cooper: Performing Live In Sydney 2011

76

Today marks Alice Cooper’s birthday. The legendary Godfather of Shock Rock was born Vincent Damon Furnier on February 4, 1948 in Detroit. Alice Cooper was originally the name of a band formed in Phoenix in 1964 and fronted by the man himself. The group found success with their 1971 hit, “I’m Eighteen,” from their third studio album, Love It To Death, released that same year. Alice Cooper the band would continue their rise with songs like “School’s Out” and the No. 1 1973 album, Billion Dollar Babies.

In 1975 the group disbanded and Vince Furnier assumed the stage and legal name, Alice Cooper. He released his debut solo album that same year. A concept album called Welcome To My Nightmare, the record takes listeners through the nightmares of a child named Steven. Alice Cooper the band had already established a dark aesthetic; Alice Cooper the man stepped the spooky up a notch. His shows became famous for containing elaborate, macabre productions that garnered him the aforementioned moniker.

But Cooper was much more than just “Shock Rock.” In the 1970s, his sound and theatrics were heavily influential on the burgeoning genre of heavy metal. As such, Cooper went on to become a beloved figure in hard rock. Considering his flair for the dramatic, it’s no surprise that Cooper has appeared in a number of horror films as well as comedic flicks (Wayne’s World comes to mind). He’s also known for his sharp wit, and in 2004 he began hosting a successful radio show called Nights With Alice Cooper. And to top it all off, Cooper is a killer golfer.

But although he has branched out into a number of fields, Alice Cooper still finds time to devote to music. On September 26, 2011 he brought his renowned stage show — as part of his Welcome 2 My Nightmare Tour supporting the sequel to his solo debut — to the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, Australia complete with “snakes, decapitations, pyrotechnics, copious amounts of fake blood and all the biggest hits,” as per a note accompanying the video of the performance. Those hits include “I’m Eighteen,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “Feed My Frankenstein,” “School’s Out” and more. “It’s essential and unforgettable viewing,” the note continued.
