Midnight North Preview ‘There’s Always A Story’ With “Wild Card” [Listen]

Like every other band, 2020 posed challenges for Midnight North. In addition to derailing the group’s typically-extensive touring plans, they began work in January on their fourth album only to be derailed in March just ahead of the finish line. Following months of setbacks and postponements, Midnight North are finally ready to release their fourth studio album, There’s Always A Story, out on May 4th. On Friday, the band offered fans another preview of the record with “Wild Card”.

The single comes as the second off the album, following “Good Days” released back in June. Featured on the track is frequent Midnight North collaborator Jason Crosby who contributes his piano-playing prowess to the acoustic tune. The song’s “Dire Wolf”-like opening and acoustic walk-downs make it feel instantly familiar. However, bandleader Grahame Lesh, son of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, forges his own path on this track and throughout the band’s discography with his personal lyrics.

Coming in as Midnight North’s fourth studio album since their debut in 2013, There’s Alway A Story marks a new era for the band. This is the first record to feature drummer Nathan Graham, as well as the group’s first studio effort as a quartet. In addition to Crosby, familiar faces abound on the album with guest appearances by the Trey Anastasio Band horns (James Casey, Natalie Cressman, and Jennifer Hartswick), Scott Law, Marcus Machado, and many more.
