TOOL’s Maynard James Keenan Discusses Second COVID-19 Diagnosis, Recovery

86

Maynard James Keenan had a rough 2020.

The TOOL singer admittedly contracted COVID-19 in late February 2020 while on tour with the band in promotion of their chart-topping 2019 album, Fear Inoculum. Now it appears Keenan contracted COVID-19 again at some point in mid-November and was even taken to the hospital out of caution in early December.

Keenan opened up about his second COVID-19 diagnosis during a new episode of Apple Music‘s ‎The Strombo Show, where he detailed the scary experience battling the coronavirus and pneumonia at the same time.

“Ugly, ugly. Couldn’t breathe, I could barely put two words together without going into a coughing fit, you know? It ended up kind of also progressing into pneumonia,” Keenan said of the harsh realities of COVID-19. “So, if I stayed in the hospital, they said: ‘Okay, we can keep you here, but you’re fighting 12 other people for a bed and a ventilator we don’t have, so what do you want to do?’ I’m like: ‘Well, I need to breathe and I need to sleep.’”

Keenan continued, “So, you’re just treating symptoms at that point. There’s nothing you can do other than treat the symptom, so for a real cough medicine – not the crap over-the-counter [medicine] – and then like an inhaler and some antibiotics to fight the pneumonia, and strap the fuck in … I knew what I went through and I know what I’m still going through, so I would recommend that you take this [pandemic] seriously – but I feel like that’s just going to fall on deaf ears.”

As of February, it seems that Keenan is on the mend again, but his second contraction of COVID-19 should act as a warning sign to those who aren’t taking the virus seriously enough.

Feel better, Maynard!
