Watch Phish Riviera Maya Mexico Highlights

Today marks one year since the last Phish concert, which took place at the Moon Palace on the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, Mexico near Cancun. Overall, the 2020 Riviera Maya run was the band’s fourth installment of their destination event after its debut in 2016 and a year off in 2018.

In honor of the one-year anniversary of the last Phish show as well as tonight’s Dinner And A Movie featuring the band’s February 22, 2019 concert in Mexico, JamBase takes a look at a video from each year of Phish Riviera Maya via the JamBase Live Video Archive.

Sand ~ Ghost ~ 2001 | January 15, 2016

The first Phish Riviera Maya concert took place on January 15, 2016, the Vermont quartet’s first-ever show in Mexico and their first international show since June 16, 2000 in Osaka, Japan, as per Phish.net. For the occasion, Phish delivered a number of ocean/beach/tropical themed songs including opener “A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing,” “Ya Mar,” “Theme From The Bottom,” The Who’s “Drowned” to kick off the second set and more. The second frame also saw the band performing “Sand,” another fitting song considering the shows take place right on the beach.

Mercury | January 14, 2017

Phish returned to Barcelo in 2017, having released their 2016 album Big Boat in the interim. The second night of the run on Janaury 14 saw the band playing Big Boat’s “Breath And Burning” in the first set, which was inspired by Trey Anastasio watching the audience play in the sand and waves at the inaugural Riviera Maya. Phish would also play another Big Boat track that was notoriously cut from the album by producer Bob Ezrin, “Mercury,” which came during the “Crosseyed And Painless” laced second set.

Read an excerpt of JamBase’s coverage of the show below:

Up next was “Mercury,” which despite being shelved between the 2015 and 2016 Dick’s runs seems to be back in regular rotation. The complex Anastasio/Marshall gem that was cut from Big Boat has now been played five times in the past 21 shows. “Mercury” was a highlight of the show as Phish nailed the composed parts and dug into the more open-ended sections with passion and energy.

Carini | February 23, 2019

After taking a break from Mexico in 2018, Phish headed back to Barcelo in 2019, this time in February. The final night of the run on February 23 (two years ago today) saw the band unleash a nearly fully segued second set, the crown jewel of which was a “Carini” sandwiched between “Tweezer” and “Ghost.” The show would mark Phish’s last at Barcelo.

Everything’s Right | February 23, 2020

In 2020, the band relocated to Riviera Maya’s Moon Palace and expanded the event to four days with a long “welcome” set on Thursday, February 20. The last Phish show to date took place a year ago today on February 23, 2020. The band fit in “Everything’s Right” a little over halfway through the first set. Read JamBase’s coverage of “Everything’s Right” below:

Up next was “Everything’s Right,” which led into the afternoon’s first extended jam. The band stuck in the song’s typical dark minor-key for a long time unlike many past versions of “Everything’s Right” featuring blissful improvisation. McConnell played lead on Fender Rhodes for the meat of the “Everything’s Right” jam while Trey focused on rhythmic work, bassist Mike Gordon utilized an envelope filter effect and Fish held down the beat. Eventually, Phish did modulate to a blissful jam space at which point Trey took the lead and strung together one beautiful riff after another. The quartet built to a crowd-pleasing peak to end “Everything’s Right.”
