Grateful Dead Play “Rubin And Cherise” For The First Time On St. Patrick’s Day 1991 [Listen]

Thirty-three years ago tonight, the Grateful Dead rolled into Landover, MD to open an 18-show spring tour with four nights at the Capital Centre. For the tour’s opening night on March 17th, the band gave Deadheads in attendance a St. Patrick’s Day surprise by playing the Jerry Garcia solo tune “Rubin And Cherise” for the first time.

The Dead started the show’s first set that night with the Bob Weir-led “Hell In A Bucket” which moved right into “Sugaree” and continued with “Walkin’ Blues”, “Peggy-O” and a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “Queen Jane Approximately”. Following a brief pause, the band launched into the familiar opening chords of “Rubin And Cherise” and the audience responded with approval and applause after recognizing the song, which first appeared on Garcia’s Cats Under the Stars solo album released in April 1978.

After ending the first set with “Let It Grow”, the Dead returned following set break with performances of “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider”, “Man Smart, Woman Smarter”, “Truckin’”, “New Speedway Boogie”, “The Wheel”, and more.
