Happy 75th Birthday David Gilmour: Watch Pink Floyd’s Reedited ‘Pulse’ Concert Film

125

Today is David Gilmour’s 75th birthday. The legendary Pink Floyd guitarist and singer-songwriter was born on March 6, 1946 in Cambridge, England. Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in late 1967 shortly before the departure of his friend and founding guitarist Syd Barrett. Syd was Floyd’s primary songwriter and lead singer, but in his absence, Gilmour and bassist Roger Waters split these roles, with Gilmour handling guitar and most of the lead vocal duties (as well as some writing) and Waters becoming the primary songwriter.

The singer/songwriter tandem of Gilmour and Waters — along with integral contributions from co-founding members keyboardist Richard Wright and drummer Nick Mason — would go on to record some of the greatest rock records of all time and mastered the art of the concept album. This began in 1973 with perhaps the greatest concept album of them all, The Dark Side Of The Moon.

But by the time of another great theme album, 1979’s The Wall, tensions between Waters — who conceived and largely wrote that record — and the rest of the band had come to a head. Wright parted ways with Floyd during the recording of The Wall and Waters departed in 1985, leaving Gilmour at the helm. But Wright returned in 1986 and Pink Floyd released their first album without Waters, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, in 1987, officially ushering in the Gilmour-led era.

This time, the late 1980s and early ‘90s, wasn’t particularly known for its albums but did feature some stellar live performances and productions. One of these was captured for posterity with the 1995 live album Pulse, later released as a concert film. The show took place on October 20, 1994 at London’s famed Earls Court in support of the 1994 Pink Floyd album The Division Bell. The landmark 14-night Earls Court run contained the last performances on Pink Floyd’s final tour.

The concert features a complete performance of The Dark Side Of The Moon as well as Division Bell tracks “Keep Talking” and “High Hopes,” songs Gilmour co-wrote with his wife and novelist Polly Samson. The show’s encore included the band’s tribute to Syd Barrett, “Wish You Were Here,” and “Comfortably Numb,” which contains one of the greatest and most iconic guitar solos of all time from Gilmour.
