Today, Saturday, March 20th, a slew of artists from the extended New York City music community will come together for Love, New York, a virtual fundraiser marking the one-year anniversary of the beginning of “shelter-in-place” last spring. Presented by the Sound Mind Collective, the event will raise funds for NYC independent artists as well as a pair of independent Brooklyn venues, C’mon Everybody and Barbès.
The lineup features a number of notable names in the NYC music scene as well as those who have since scattered to other places (once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker) including paris_monster, James Casey (Trey Anastasio Band), Nick Cassarino, Erin Boyd, Louis Cato, Tash Neal, Raydar Ellis, Shira Elias (Turkuaz), and many more.
Many of the musicians on the Love, New York lineup have not been able to perform since the state implemented its initial shelter-in-place order one year ago today. At that time, it was unclear just how long the resulting live music shutdown would last. Just days before the order went into effect, Governor Andrew Cuomo had claimed during an appearance on The New York Times’ The Daily Podcast that shelter-in-place “is not going to happen … for New York City. For any city or county to take an emergency action, the state has to approve it. And I wouldn’t approve shelter-in-place.”
When Cuomo changed course and approved the order soon after, it was initially supposed to last only through the end of April 2020. Now, a year later, music venues remain closed and the majority of New York musicians remain out of work. There is, however, a light at the end of the tunnel: Cuomo recently cleared concerts to resume at limited capacities in the state beginning on April 1st, 2021.
