Monica Joins Brandi Carlile At The Ryman Auditorium

70

Vocalist Monica performed with Brandi Carlile and her band last night at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The livestreamed concert was held in front of a limited capacity audience of COVID-19-vaccinated fans.

Carlile began the show with a solo acoustic guitar cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” The rest of the band then emerged for “Raise Hell” and “The Story.” Carlile and her longtime bandmates “the twins” — guitarist Tim Hanseroth and bassist Phil Hanseroth — sang three-part harmony while delivering “The Eye,” which they did again later in the show around a single a microphone for “Cannonball.”

The set also contained covers of “Madman Across The River” by Elton John and “A Case Of You” by Joni Mitchell (who was watching the livestream), the latter performed by Carlile on piano with accompaniment by cellist Josh Neumann. Carlile led a rendition of “The Wheels of Laredo” that appeared on both the 2019 Tanya Tucker album Carlile produced and The Highwomen album Carlile contributed to significantly. Carlile then brought Monica on to the storied Ryman stage for The Highwomen’s “Crowded Table,” which recently won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song.

The latter part of the setlist contained such favorites as “The Joke,” “Pride and Joy” and “Party of One.” Carlile closed the main set with a new, unknown titled song from an upcoming album she revealed was completed. The night at The Ryman ended with Carlile, the Hanseroth twins and The Secret SistersLydia Rogers singing a gorgeous rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Part of the proceeds from Sunday’s concert at The Ryman were donated to the Rainey Day Fund, Fanny’s School Of Music and Color Me Country. Carlile’s Looking Out Foundation matched donations made to the organizations, as did John Prine’s widow Fiona Prine and CMT.
