PREMIERE: Freekbass & Sammi Garett Channel 1986’s ‘Labyrinth’ In Video For New Single “The Maze” [Watch]

Freekbass has teamed up with his Bump Assembly bandmate/Turkuaz vocalist Sammi Garett as well as Turkuaz saxophonist Greg Sanderson for a new single, “The Maze”, and an official video to go along with it. The new “The Maze” video premieres today exclusively on Live For Live Music.

The off-kilter bassist has kept busy over the past year by releasing a new single each month with an array of collaborators including Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band), Adryon de Leon (Orgone, Matador Soul Sounds), Doug Wimbash, and more. Freekbass is also preparing to release a new Bump Assembly vinyl EP, Krameria, via Color Red, and has been spending his Saturday nights virtually chopping it up with various artists and viewers on his Saturday Night Chit-Chat Facebook Live variety show.

The new collaboration with Garett presented both new and familiar ground for Freekbass. The two have worked on songs in the studio together for Freekbass & The Bump Assembly, the band also featuring Rico Lewis (drums) and Sky White (keys). Freek and Sammi have also collaborated as solo artists in the past—the official music video for their last joint track, “Love In Your Pocket”,  similarly premiered on Live For Live Music back in 2o18. For “The Maze”, however, the two were forced to work from a distance: Freek from the Queen City, Cincinnati, OH; Sammi from Queens, NY.

As Freek noted, “We started with a track that I had been working on in the studio for a bit. The groove had an ’80s vibe, and felt like it needed to go full-fledged Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam meets Sheila E.” Convinced that Sammi’s voice was just what the track needed, Freek continued, “I sent her the basic track, and a few days later she sent back a slammin’ concept with lyrics and melody. Greg Sanderson heard the track and sent along the perfect horn parts, on top of that. A few times back and forth, and we had it.”

Garett envisioned the song’s lyrics as an homage to cult-favorite 1980s fantasy film Labyrinth, which stars the late David Bowie. As Sammi explained, “I remember going to Blockbuster and renting the VHS over and over again! Then my amazing parents bought me my very own copy! So I could watch it without the late fees. I remember bringing it on playdates I went on, too. Trying to show all my friends the awesome work of art that is Labyrinth. I guess I couldn’t leave home without it! I mean, David Bowie and Jim Henson?! Come on! Jim Henson’s work is also just so iconic and very nostalgic. If you haven’t seen the movie, go watch it! And then maybe The Dark Crystal. I also named our late, great family dog Toby. IYKYK.”

Taking an aesthetic cue from its thematic inspiration, the video for the techno-leaning “The Maze” mixes stylized, colorful, fairytale-like imagery with a touch of charming, lo-fi VFX to frame the track with a sense of childish wonder.
