A crew of kindred musical spirits—including Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno and keyboardist Neal Evans alongside Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch and keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall—has released a cover of Bob Marley favorite “Mellow Mood” via Vintage League Music.
While this particular “Mellow Mood” quartet now represents a half-Lettuce, half-Soulive split, Krasno, Evans, Deitch, and Hall’s musical histories intertwine in more ways than one. In addition to their work with Soulive, Krasno and Evans are both former members of Lettuce themselves, while Hall and Deitch, two current members of Lettuce, have both collaborated with Soulive on numerous occasions through the years—and that merely scratches the surface of the collaborative history between these artists.
Taken at a quicker, more lively pace than the original Marley version, this version of “Mellow Mood” injects some added energy into the strolling reggae tune, creating a vibe better suited for a brisk walk on the beach than a wake-and-bake on the front porch.
As Krasno explained in an Instagram post, “About 13 years ago we recorded one of my favorite [Bob Marley] songs at our tiny studio in Brooklyn. I distinctly remember the drip from pipes over head landing on my neck while trying to record drums. Eventually that room flooded and we lost a lot of gear/music. Somehow this hard drive made it…. Fast forward to 2021, that hard drive ends up at Alan [Evans’] studio and he uncovered this gem.”
