St. Vincent Shares ‘Daddy’s Home’ Inspiration Spotify Playlist

109

St. Vincent (Annie Clark) will release Daddy’s Home, her first new album in five years, on May 14 via Loma Vista. The single “Pay Your Way With Pain” dropped earlier this week, giving a first taste of what Daddy’s Home sounds like.

The full scope of the next chapter in St. Vincent’s ever-evolving sonic landscape won’t be realized until the album comes out in a few months. But for those further curious about what influenced the follow-up to 2017’s MASSEDUCTION, St. Vincent curated a Spotify playlist consisting of songs that inspired Daddy’s Home.

Press materials regarding detailed the circumstances that impacted the contents of the pending album, explaining:

In the winter of 2019, as MASSEDUCTION’s title track won the Grammy for Best Rock Song and the album won Best Recording Package, St. Vincent’s father was released from prison. She began writing the songs that would become Daddy’s Home, closing the loop on a journey that began with his incarceration in 2010, and ultimately led her back to the vinyl her dad had introduced her to during her childhood. The records she has probably listened to more than any other music in her entire life. Music made in sepia-toned downtown New York from 1971 – 1975.

Gritty.

Grimy.

Sleazy.

The playlist Clark curated captures the essence of that sepia-toned downtown New York music from 1971 – 1975. It begins with “Pay Your Way With Pain” and is followed by 19 additional classics and deeper cuts by the likes of Steely Dan, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, War, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, Nina Simone, Derek & The Dominos, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Meters, The Pointer Sisters and Dolly Parton, among a few others.
