Todd Snider Announces New Album ‘First Agnostic Church of Hope And Wonder’ & Shares Single

83

Todd Snider announced a new album, First Agnostic Church of Hope And Wonder, arriving on April 23 via Aimless Records / Thirty Tigers. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter also shared the single, “Sail On, My Friend.”

Snider pulled the title for First Agnostic Church of Hope And Wonder from the weekly livestreams he’s conducted throughout the pandemic. Snider showcased his characteristic irreverent humor when he described the album as a house of worship presided over by “a preacher who’s full of shit, and when everyone starts to realize it, he asks God to help and God does, proving once and for all that God is hilarious.”

Todd enlisted the help of Midland drummer Robbie Crowell and multi-instrumentalist Tchad Blake to help capture the “fatback” rhythms heard on the album, an homage to the funk and reggae stars of the 60s and 70s and described as “funk in back and busking up front…something idiosyncratic, without any reference to other records…we were trying to get drum sounds and grooves that made their own kind of sense,” Snider said in a statement.

First Agnostic Church of Hope And Wonder also features a number of tributes to Snider’s friends and beloved musicians who have died recently including “Handsome John” in honor of Todd’s mentor John Prine as well as “Turn Me Loose (I’ll Never Be The Same)” inspired by a favorite phrase of Jerry Jeff Walker. Along with remembrances of Col. Bruce Hampton and Neal Casal, the LP’s lead single, “Sail On, My Friend” is a tribute to the late Yonder Mountain String Band co-founder Jeff Austin.
