Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio’s The Divided Sky Foundation confirmed the purchase of a substance use disorder (SUD) treatment center in Ludlow, Vermont. Ascension Recovery Services will manage the currently unnamed, non-profit treatment center.
Purchase of the facility was supported in large part by over $1.2 million in donations raised during Anastasio’s eight-week, Friday night livestreams series “The Beacon Jams,” held at The Beacon Theatre in New York City last October and November. Anastasio has 14 years of sobriety and chose his adoptive home state of Vermont to launch a treatment facility in order to help those similarly affected by alcoholism and addiction.
“Substance use disorders affect people from all walks of life,” Anastasio stated. “And the problem is intimately linked with isolation – whether that’s isolation due to the pandemic or for any other reason. ‘The Beacon Jams’ helped us find a way to connect people and get this project off the ground. To be able to do that together during this difficult year touches my heart.”
According to a press release, the goal of the facility is “to be a local asset not only for treatment, but for giving back to the community” and “to serve people from all income levels.” Despite ranking 11th in the United States in drug overdose rates, the entire state of Vermont currently has only four state-certified residential addiction treatment facilities. Job training and workforce reintegration will be part of the new facility, along with educational and other individually tailored programs.
“Like so many people in America and so many in Vermont, I became addicted to opiates,” Anastasio stated. “I was extremely lucky to have access to care, and I know how important it is to be part of a recovery community. I’m grateful that we can help provide that opportunity for others.
“None of this would be possible without the hard work and generosity of so many people. I want to personally thank Madison Square Garden Entertainment for hosting the shows at the Beacon Theatre, and Twitch for sending ‘The Beacon Jams’ out across the world. I also want to personally thank all the people who supported The Divided Sky Foundation so generously, and the fans who contributed everything from donations to well wishes. It means so much to me, and it’s going to mean so much to the families that will benefit from this treatment center.”
A Letter Of Intent submitted to the State Of Vermont by The Divided Sky Foundation and Ascension Recovery Services on October 26, 2020 detailed the planned use of the space by writing:
The program will operate with 40 beds at maximum capacity. 30 of these beds will be for residential treatment, and 10 beds will be used for initial stabilization and withdrawal management. The Divided Sky Foundation will seek to license 40 beds as therapeutic community residence beds through the Agency of Human Services’ Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living’s Division of Licensing and Protection. This treatment center will serve people with co-occurring SUD and mental health disorders and will include a track for people who are justice-system involved and need treatment as part of their reintegration into the community. The mission is to provide the highest quality SUD and mental health disorder treatment for anyone in need.
The following services will be provided: 1) stabilization and withdrawal management, 2) residential treatment for SUD and mental health disorders, and 3) aftercare individual and group counseling. The Divided Sky treatment center will use premier evidence-based treatment including, but not limited to, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, in addition to Medication-Assisted Treatment. The service area will primarily focus on the state of Vermont but could include referral sources from other areas of the country as well. The goal is to be able to serve people with any payer source, whether private or public insurance, in addition to people who are uninsured or underinsured.
Anastasio and The Divided Sky Foundation plan to open the treatment center in Ludlow, Vermont by the end of 2021. The Divided Sky Fund was established through Phish’s non-profit the WaterWheel Foundation, which was established in 1997 to oversee the group’s charitable endeavors.
