Watch Lebo & Friends Perform ‘Instrumental Innovations’ At The Chapel

91

ALO guitarist Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) & Friends delivered two performances to close out their two-day Instrumental Innovations run on March 13 at The Chapel in San Francisco. The band fit in instrumental covers of the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Steely Dan and more in both the early and late show.

Lebo & Friends — keyboardist Adam MacDougall (Circles Around the Sun/The Black Crowes), bassist Reed Mathis and ALO drummer Ezra Lipp — got the early show underway with Neil Young’s “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” followed by GD’s “Casey Jones.” The shuffling Paul Simon classic “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” followed before Dylan’s “My Back Pages” led into ALO’s “Dead Still Dance.” The band then blasted off with Elton John’s “Rocket Man” ahead of early show closer “Undertow.”

The late show got going with Steely Dan’s “Do It Again” which led into Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)” before fittingly reprising “Do It Again.” The stellar Shuggie Otis tune “Strawberry Letter 23” followed ahead of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times.” Next, the Hunter/Garcia number “Bird Song” would then encompass “Eleanor Rigby” ahead of the Peter Gabriel favorite “Sledgehammer” which found its way into “The Twin Peaks Theme.” ALO’s “Suspended” would close out the late show which saw the band returning for an encore of the slide guitar-inflected Santo & Johnny instrumental “Sleepwalk.”
