Garcia Family Provisions, Grateful Dead Announce Record Store Day Drops [Listen]

58

With this year’s two-day Record Store Day “Drops” celebration quickly approaching, the full list of official releases has arrived. Among this year’s crop of vinyl releases are selections from Garcia Family Provisions, representing the Jerry Garcia Band, as well as the Grateful Dead.

Headed for independent record stores across the country on June 12th (the first of two RSD Drops for 2021) is the Dead’s 5/3/72 show at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, France. Taken from the Dead’s legendary 1972 European tour, this first night at the Paris venue finds the band in fine form. This isn’t merely a subjective fan opinion, as the Grateful Dead themselves picked out four tracks from 5/3/72 (“Jack Straw”, “China Cat Sunflower”, “I Know You Rider”, and “Tennessee Jed”) to include on the platinum-selling triple live album Europe ’72, which chronicled the band’s transnational trek.

Available on vinyl for the first time, Grateful Dead Olympia Theatre, Paris, France 5/3/72 will be pressed onto 180 gram vinyl in a 6LP collection and limited to 10,000 copies. The records were mixed from the original 16-track tapes by Jeffrey Norman and mastered for vinyl by Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser and produced for release by David Lemieux.

From the Jerry Garcia Band catalog, Garcia Family Provisions have chosen to issue the time-tested JGB self-titled live album on vinyl for the first time. Available on the second Record Store Day “Drop” on July 17th, the vinyl pressing of Jerry Garcia Band will celebrate the album’s 30th anniversary after originally being released on CD and cassette back in 1991.

Featuring over two hours of music pressed across five 180 gram LPs, the vinyl reissue also features liner note essays from NBA legend Bill Walton and noted music critic Steven Hyden. Of note on the vinyl is Side J, which hosts an etching of Garcia, hand-raised high as he punctuates a spellbinding set of music with a set-closing “Deal”. The vinyl reissue of the Jerry Garcia Band’s only live album released during Garcia’s lifetime will be limited to 7,500 copies.

Hyden notes in the album’s new liner essay,

The result on Jerry Garcia Band is an album that feels, in the best possible sense, like church, a sacred sanctuary that a community visits when it needs to be reminded of its better and purer selves… a work of incredible warmth and wisdom that can reboot and then refresh even the weariest of hearts.
