The Grateful Dead were known to deliver fantastic performances on their spring tours over the years, but springtime also means the return of baseball, and 30 years ago today, half of the famous rock band took the field at Candlestick Park to help the San Francisco Giants open their 1993 season.

On April 12th, 1993, Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Vince Welnick took part in the Giants’ home opener as they performed an a-cappella version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in front of their hometown fans.

Bob Weir recalled the 1993 performance in a March 2021 interview with Relix, stating,

What was really interesting to me was the way the entire media ecosystem fell in love with that footage. It was the first home game after Barry Bonds had joined the team. We had worked up the anthem while we were on the road and we felt pretty good about it. Then when we went out and nailed it—with all the visual spectacle and “Play ball!”—it was shown everywhere and that certainly changed some perceptions about us.
