Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Bacon Parody The Allman Brothers Band’s “Ramblin’ Man” In ‘Tonight Show’ Sketch [Watch]

76

Kevin Bacon helped Jimmy Fallon reimagine the writing process for Allman Brothers Band classic “Ramblin’ Man” in a sketch on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show.

In a “Behind The Music”-style clip, comically billed as “First Drafts of Rock,” we see Fallon (playing a surprisingly convincing Gregg Allman), Bacon (playing a somewhat less convincing Dickey Betts) working out the lyrics to the 1973 hit. The catch: Fallon’s Gregg Allman just can’t get past that one line about Betts being born on a Greyhound bus.

While the song continues playing, “Allman” and “Betts” get into the details—in song—like how Betts’ mother intended to name him after the bus driver, Nicky Bus, but wrote the name down wrong.

Watch Kevin Bacon and Jimmy Fallon’s amusing sendup of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Ramblin’ Man” from The Tonight Show below or stream the full episode of The Tonight Show via Peacock.

The Tonight Show – First Drafts: “Ramblin’ Man” – Lyrics

KEVIN
Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man
I’m tryin’ to make a livin’ and doin’ the best I can
And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus
I was born a ramblin’ man

Like I said, I was born in a Greyhound
The people on the bus were like, “Hey, what’s that noise?”
And some guy yelled, “I think that a lady’s giving birth.
In the back seat of this Greyhound bus.”

The bus driver screamed, “Wait, should I pull over?”
A few people on board said, “No, just drive.”
But a couple other people said, “You gotta park this bus.”
The driver did not park the bus

JIMMY
I knew you were born a ramblin’ man
But I didn’t know about the bus birth ’til just now
I’d kinda prefer we sing about something else
But I’m also weirdly curious

(KEVIN) If you’ve got a question you can ask it
(KEVIN) I’ll try to remember the details from that ’Hound
(JIMMY) I don’t even know where to start. I guess how much did you weigh?
(KEVIN) Somewhere between 6 and 20 pounds

(JIMMY) Twenty pounds is too big for a baby
(JIMMY) I wanna say the average is like 8?
(KEVIN) Well it’s not like they had a scale on the bus
(KEVIN) That was just an estimate

(JIMMY) Did your mother name you on that Greyhound
(KEVIN) She named me after the driver of that bus
(KEVIN) His name was Nicky Bus
(JIMMY) But your name is Dickey Betts
(KEVIN) Cuz she wrote his name down wrong

BOTH
Dickey Betts was born on a Greyhound
Dickey Betts was born on a Greyhound
Dickey Betts was born on a Greyhound bus
Dickey Betts was born on a bus
